70% of Homes Don’t Have Security: Why It’s a Rich Person’s Game
When you think of wealth... flashy cars, shiny jewelry, and private jets are usually the first things that come to mind. But nowadays, these aren’t the only markers of privilege — it’s also being able to enjoy privacy and security. In fact, celebrities, executives, and business moguls alike are all investing in security more than ever before, whether they’re building $500,000 panic rooms or hiding their mansions on Google Maps.
Even looking beyond the wealthiest, the average cost for home security in households across the U.S. (including monitoring, installation, and the equipment) is $934 per year. The price of safety doesn’t exactly come cheap, but where does that leave everyone else? According to a home security survey, only 30% of Americans own a home security product, and these are most commonly video cameras, video doorbells, and smart locks. This is especially worrying considering a burglary happens nearly every 30 seconds, according to FBI data. What’s more, intruders don’t discriminate, and even those who live in safe neighborhoods experience break-ins.
These statistics alone are enough to prove the importance of having a reliable home security system. Plus, studies do confirm that security systems are the best deterrent against a burglary. However, it’s not always accessible for everyone. For years, most systems were unaffordable and would typically cost at least $1,500, which is out of reach for the average household. Meanwhile, professional monitoring can cost at least $70 per month.
But we’re here to say that home security doesn’t have to be a rich person’s game. Regardless of the size of your home, the neighborhood you live in, and no matter how many expensive valuables you own, everyone deserves to feel protected. This is the driving force of our work at Kangaroo: to make security accessible for everyone.
To us, the world of security and smart homes shouldn’t be limited to fancy gear, scheming contracts, and intimidating price tags. It’s why we started with a $25 Doorbell Camera, which is inarguably the most affordable doorbell to date. From there, every product we built has been rooted in simplicity, accessibility, and security. We don’t plan on changing our course. Ever.
So long as there are homes and communities that could use protection, we’ll be here to provide peace of mind that doesn’t break the bank.
